Alvin is a Jersey man who truly cares for the parish in which he was born.
As the proprietor of a business in St. Helier which brings him into direct contact with the public, Alvin has constantly listened to the views of the town's residents and business owners during recent years. Alvin believes that if you want to get something done, do it yourself.
Practical, very sincere and possessing business acumen, he has become increasingly frustrated about the direction St. Helier is taking. His mission - to restore the good things to St. Helier, to improve its future for the benefit of its parishioners and ultimately the island, in the way the islanders want with structure, planning and forward thinking. He wants the town to be safe, friendly, clean and vibrant as well as a commercial success.
Alvin is a "no nonsense" person who has run successful businesses in Jersey for the past seventeen years. He has the necessary drive, experience and love of the island and the parish in which he was born to "see the job through". Determined, in touch with people from all walks of life and their wishes, Alvin wants to see a breath of new life come into the town.
Alvin was born in his grandmother's house in Stopford Road, St Helier. He started school at nearby St. Christopher's School, moving to St. Mark's Primary from where he attended St. Helier Boys School before his family moved to Bristol where he completed his education at Grammar School level.
On his mother's side, his Jersey roots are dug deep as his mother Margaret Coutanche's family go way back in Jersey history. Alvin's father, Benjamin. born in Singapore, is an accomplished musician who played drums and guitar, which instruments he continues to teach. Benjamin came to Jersey in the 1950's, met Alvin's mother and stayed in Jersey. Benjamin's musical talent was inherited by Alvin who himself is sufficiently good a musician to have played professionally in the National Youth Orchestra and when in Guernsey was part of a band called 57th Parallel. Apart from his interest in music, Alvin has taken part in sports such as Rugby, Fencing, Archery and Rifle Shooting. He is a Chamber of Commerce member.
On leaving school, Alvin went on to Guernsey where he worked in the catering industry for five years and was Chef in such establishments as Old Government House, Nino's, St. Emilion and the Steak and Stilton. He then spent a season working in Alderney prior to returning to Jersey where he was one of the first chefs employed at what was the Borsalino Rocque later known as Bistro Rocque.
Alvin left to travel, married an American lady and worked abroad. Returning to Jersey in 1990 and with the help of a £5,000 loan from his father, Alvin opened the first of his restaurants called B.B's, named after Bridget Bardot, which was later renamed Alvin's Bistro. The restaurant was immensely popular and talked about (and missed) to this day. He sold the Bistro and concentrated on another of the businesses he had also opened called Hot Stuff Pizza. He has continued to run Hot Stuff Pizza (hand's on) as well as his other business interests.
Alvin has come a long way from being a Chef and is a restaurateur and business man. Although he still certainly know how to cook, his management skills, drive and ambition are more called for these days!
